The writer of this psalm points out that there is one person we cannot play this game with, as He knows all about us even without us saying one thing. Recognize God is always with us.

He calls us to take up the cross, to share the burden of the world.

Carrying the cross is a way of life. It is about putting God first.

Paying taxes to Caesar is thought to be a perfect trap for Jesus. The Jews had their own money but for taxes, they had to pay in Roman money – effaced with Caesar’s image. Here Matthew provides insight into the nature and brilliance of Jesus and His purpose.

We hear some uncomfortable messages this week. Aaron built a golden calf when he replied to the demands of the people. When the church gets anxious, it creates golden calves. It looses celebration and festivity, trying to save itself. Paul encourages us to not be anxious but with prayer and thanksgiving make our requests known.

Through the story of Hagar – a foreigner and slave who flees with the child born of Abraham, we find the great truth of God. He is the one who sees and hears the cries of the afflicted but does not scorn, but acts with justice and steadfast love.

In Syria we hear of all the plights of orphans and even in our own country many children and adults are left ‘alone’.

Jesus cared about His friends who would be left alone when He was gone.

Jesus left them a ‘helper’ so they would not be alone, no matter how hard the journey would be, His love would always be there.
