8th February, 2026 (Year A – Epiphany 5) “The Midwives & Liberation on the Job”

Free Bible Image

This month as a special treat we have an extraordinary set of 4 sermons from David Barrow.

We thought we should recognise the exceptional quality of David’s messages by making them available as a continuous set in February to give a 4-volume unpacking based on the Old Testament story of the Jews from Joseph to Moses. These are very high-quality presentations – every much as relevant to the twenty first century as to the BC era.

This means that we will have a 4 week break with the lectionary, which is based on three-year cycles (A, B, and C). We are now re-entering Year A, so if you want to stick to the lectionary, links to the previous Year A are accessible through the 4 links from last year below.

Sunday 29th January 2023, Epiphany 4 “Truly, deeply blessed” – Rev Dr Mark Hillis
Sunday 5th February 2023, Epiphany 5 “On Salt and Light” – Miriam Pepper
Sunday 12th February 2023, Epiphany 6 “Rope of Life” – Lothar Nowak
Sunday 19th February 2023, Transfiguration “What does it look like?” – Rev Rob Hanks
Sunday 26th February 2023, Lent 1 “Into the wilderness” – Catherine Pepper

TODAY – The midwives teach us that liberation does not begin with a burning bush.

It begins when ordinary people decide that obedience to God sets limits on what the state, boss, or the system can ask of them.

It tells us to train our attention, to help us recognise what faithfulness looks like when it shows up quietly without applause.

ALL AGE MESSAGE

This is story of ‘Liberation’ delivered by Shiphrah and Puah, to all the Hebrew male babies they delivered.

The Pharaoh’s authority ends where God’s begins, and so they quietly refuse to comply.

This is fear as faithfulness. That is what faithfulness looked like that day for one Hebrew baby boy, called Moses.
